EducationI graduated with a 4.0 from the Southern University of Edwardsville in 2005 with a Master's of Elementary Education degree. My primary area of study was reading. I also earned a Bachelor's degree from University of Missouri in Music Education. Other educational institutions I've attended include Washington University in St. Louis, MO and Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville, IL.
ExperienceI have 33 years of tutoring experience (in addition to approximately 25 years of classroom teaching experience in pre-school through college).
I've recently left teaching in the classroom to pursue 1:1 teaching. I feel many children are "slipping through the cracks" in the classroom and benefit from having individual attention.
I consider myself more of a student mentor rather than simply a tutor.
-A traditional tutor works 1:1 or in small groups and assists students in completing current assignments.
-Typically, traditional tutoring breaks down the steps into bite-sized steps. No new material, skills or learning strategies are taught.
-Traditional tutoring reacts to the current situation and frequently leads to dependence on tutoring.
-I only work 1:1 with students. Even though students may be of the same age and learning similar material, all children learn differently and deserve to have instruction customized to their needs.
-I often help with current assignments. However, I always watch for signs that a student may have misunderstood prior concepts. It's frequently these concepts that hold students back from excelling in current work. I use current work to re-teach these concepts.
-When teaching or re-teaching concepts, I make sure my teaching is understood by the student. It's my responsibility to learn how the student learns best and adapt my teaching to the student.
-In addition to re-teaching prior material, I often teach entire curriculum to home schooled children and always include study skills in my lessons.
-Rather than reacting to the current need, prior to the first lesson, I will spend a significant amount of time with the parents (and teachers) of the student to learn more about the student's educational needs. I will also give a brief diagnostic assessment to further learn about the student's strengths and weaknesses. Using the information gained, I will create a customized learning plan for your child. I will write lesson plans for every lesson designed to help meet the goals you set.
-My goal for every student is that they become an independent thinker and learner and no longer need my help.
HobbiesI enjoy reading (my favorite activity). I like to read suspense and horror novels and informative text about anything of interest. At the moment, this includes books about whales, borderline personality disorder and reading improvement.
I have two cats and I also enjoy most other animals. My cats are best buddies.
In the warmer months, I enjoy water activities. I like to swim, boat and raft (white-water rafting is great!)
I love to learn. I'm almost always taking some type of online class. Sometimes I just take classes in the subjects I teach to help me "stay on top of things". Other times, I like to learn about new topics. Recently, I began taking a class to learn more about using Microsoft Access.
In recent years, I've developed a love for anything computer. I've gone back to school to learn about programming and databases. Along the way, I learned I really enjoy online poker (just for fun - no money).
